How do I troubleshoot non-responsive/dead keypads?

If a keypad isn't working, you need to establish whether it is just that keypad, or the whole system, which would indicate an issue with the receiver.

Possible causes of a keypad not functioning:

  • Power: Dead or very low batteries (not the issue if the LED consistently lights up)
  • Power: Poor contact of the battery terminals (not the issue if the LED consistently lights up)
  • Configuration: Incorrect settings in the 'brain' of the keypad (most likely issue if the LED circles and then shows a t)

A - POWER

When you press a button on the keypad, does it light up the LED?

1. Yes, every time: skip to section B

2. Yes, sometimes:

One common issue may be a slightly loose battery terminal. To address this, carefully remove the batteries. You will notice that each terminal has a flat terminal section that rests beneath the batteries and a small vertical section that makes contact with the side of the battery. This vertical section can become loose over time. Gently use a screwdriver to adjust it slightly inward, ensuring it creates a tighter connection when the batteries are reinserted. Repeat this adjustment for both terminals on each keypad that is experiencing issues.

Another possible cause is that the batteries are running low. In this case, you may find that it will vote once or twice but then no longer light up for a while. Then it may start working again after a short rest.

3. No - If replacing the batteries does not resolve the issue, try the advice in step 2 regarding adjustment of the vertical terminals. If the vertical terminals are broken, the keypad will not be able to draw power from the batteries and the keypad will need replacing.

B - CONFIGURATION

What does the LED show when you press a button?

1. The number that was pressed:

If the keypad shows the number that was test, it is receiving a reply from the receiver. Without a reply, the keypad's LED will circle. Use a clear test screen and vote only using the keypad that you are trying to diagnose. Check whether the vote is received and whether it is registered to the correct keypad number. It is possible for the keypad's internal configuration not to match the number sticker on the device. The keypad can be reprogrammed to the correct device number. Contact wja@clikapad.com for assistance with changing the configuration of the keypad number.

2. The LED circles and then shows a t:

This video shows how to check and change your keypad's config and the notes below explain the process for changing the config.

If all other keypads are working correctly, it's likely that there is a mismatch between the faulty keypad's configuration and that of the rest of the system.  On the keypad, hold down * and press 00075 while that is held down. After releasing the * button, the keypad will flash a series of numbers. These should start with 000 - and end with 75. Try voting again.

If none of the keypads are able to vote, the fault most likely relates to the receiver or to software configuration.

If reporting a keypad failure to the support team, please include whether the keypad lights up at all, and whether it shows the number you pressed or whether the LED circles and then shows a t. Also include details of any steps you have taken to resolve the issue.
